If you take a 6 volt sender and put 12 volts on it you will have twice the current flowing to the meter and it won't read correctly. The resistance of the 12 volt unit will be different (higher) to control the current properly. The meter and the sending unit need to be matched to the voltage available for the meter to read correctly.
